The Rimmel Apolcalips Lip Lacquers are old news, I know. I bought these in the summer when the blog-o-sphere was buzzing with excitement over them. I initially bought just the one to try out then went back for another three. I suppose that is saying something. Anyway, I figured it is better late than never, so here we are.

I was tentative about this product at first, having been described net-wide as being 'like a stain'. I have never delved into the world of 'stains', always assuming them to be dry and stubborn and patchy, naturally these terms also came to mind with regards to Apocalips. I am also not a lip gloss fan and you have to admit there is a glaring resemblance. But as with any old craze they are meant to be bought into and I had to try it for myself. I cannot for the life of me recall which came first, but now I have 4 of their shades nestled in my lip draw.

Packaging:
The outer packaging looks intriguing with its gradient effect on the tube and its geometrically shaped lid . The tube appears to be glass and the lid, plastic. At first sight, it does look much more substantial than an average lip gloss.

The wand inside it rather singular and exclusive to the line. It has a soft felt tip with a hallowing. I simply viewed this as a gimmick but it was only on application of the product that its purposed dawned on me. The little niche in the wand gathers product even after you scrape off the excess and as you glide it along your lips, you get a flush of deep rich thick color, not too much and not too little. With one swipe I can do both top and bottom lips without having to re-dip with this clever little cove. It really makes you wonder why all glosses don't come like this. A winning point.

The Product
As for the raw stuff it self. Surprisingly enough, it sat on the lips comfortably with somewhat of a creamy texture that isn't dreadfully drying. It is fairly glossy which is more so apparent with the deeper shades. As for its staining qualities, well beneath that layer of creaminess it does in fact stain the lips, something I personally liked about it! Why? Well when the product fades, which it inevitably will, the stain beneath it means that it does not leave behind a patchy mess, but a pretty flush of color. Speaking of fading, I do find the Apolcalips to last a fairly decent length of time and so doesn't require a great deal of topping up, another reason I tend to dislike lip glosses. I understand why some would describe it as being midway between a lipstick and a lip gloss, it sticks heavier and solidly on the lips as if it were a lipstick but the finish is more of that of a lip gloss, and then when it fades, it leaves a definite stain. all 3 in one!

To break up my rambling, here is the much awaited swatch-interlude.

1. 101 Celestial
A mauvey blue-toned pink

2. 301 Galaxy
A pale pink-violet

3. 501 Stellar
A bright almost fluorescent hot pink

4. 400 Big Bang
A bright super glossy blue-toned red

Personally the two shades that stand out the most to me are probably Galaxy and Stellar, only because they are just that little bit more unique than the other shades. I starred Galaxy in my Fall Favourites if you wish to check it out. The subtle pruple tone lets you carry of the effect of purple without alarming neither yourself nor those within your proximity. On the other hand Stellar has that vivid, coral-fluorescence going on about it that inspires the image of wild, exotic and very hungry flowers.

So from me this bunch gets a great big thumbs up in the objective side of matters. Perhaps my only qualm with them is that they are not the first of products I reach for and for some reason are relatively easy for me to overlook, just a personal thing. The color range is another thing, it is rather limited and unimaginative aside from the two I mentioned. Rimmel did launch a few more shades, from what I recall they tended towards nude. Most, but one,  looked as though they were threatening to make me look ill. Of course the 'but one' was out of stock and I simply wasn't motivated enough to go hunting for it again.

Intriguingly enough there are those who stray from the common view and say that they disliked the product entirely. Personally I cannot find much to dislike about it, they are good products, not particularly exciting or noteworthy, but good. I probably will not be buying any more than I have, I believe my curiosity to be satiated here. It is a shame I don't wear them more than I do, is all.

So those were the Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquers for you! I really hope you found this post insightful, whether you share my views or contradict them do let me now down below. And if you enjoyed it do not forget to 1+ me and follow.

Ta for now

Friday 4 October 2013
Fall came around a while ago as the obligatory rain here in the UK keeps reminding me and my first gut desire was to write you all a lipstick post in wake of the season. If you have been reading my blog for some time, you will already know that lipsticks are my biggest cosmetic weakness. Sadly, as I have explained in my previous post, time and situation did not allow it *sign*, I hope you will over look this deplorable delay.

It was so unbelievably difficult for me to pick out just a few lipsticks to table as my 'top' shades (or products I should say as there is a mixture), I love all my products and there were so many in my collection that fit the bill and deserve their time in the limelight. Painful as it was, I managed to control myself and cut it down to these seasonal seven...

When I imagine Fall I think jewel colors, bright, bold and vibrant and packed full of character (often other-worldly)! It is one of the most exciting and prettiest of seasons, and allows room for a little experimentation and dabbling and toeing the line of your comfort zone!

I have lipsticks, liners and a lacquer in store for you! Keep reading.

1. Illamasqua Utopia:

Now here is a peculiar shade! I am afraid the image you are seeing does it no justice, (regards to the dwindling light as rushed to get these photos taken) you will have to wait for the clearer swatches that are to come. I can only describe Utopia as '3D', and by that I mean it is not a single shade, my word, anything but! There is some antique-gold in there, a drop of orange-gold and a darker, deeper bronze interlace throughout the bullet. It has a metallic finish to it and feels matte-to-satin on the lips. Utopia has a magic touch, think 'faeries' as opposed to 'fairies'. Worn lightly it looks shimmery and intriguing, layer it and a darker character emerges with an almost Gothic edge!

2. MAC: Twig

Twig is one of those much loved shades that is almost impossible to get wrong. If I had to give it  a new name, it would be 'Rosewood'. It is soft, gentle and earthy with a satin texture. Some times described as a nude shade, not because it is nude but because the shade feels so natural on the lips, it has color but does not attract divided attention, rather it complements an individuals complexion, their face as a whole. A comfortable, cozy color, is twig.

3. Rimmel Kate Moss: 04

Edging into danger zone now, for most people 04 is a shade you would pick up, glance at, and immediately put down. It is a blackened-purple with very little warmth to it. Worn on its on it can drain your face of color and make you look ill but teamed with plenty of bronzer and warm tones on the eyes, can transform it into something different and mysterious. Purples are so hot this season and adorning lips everywhere, perhaps the perfect time to try it out yourself?

4. Revlon: Black Cherry

Now this is a gem of a find. I have been searching up and down for the perfect 'Fall Lip' without the designer price tag, disappointingly the high-street appeared to fall despairingly short in this area until I stumbled across Black Cherry! In the tube it can be quite misleading as it looks to be a deep aging brown, but on swatching it reveals to be a most glorious deep, warm, blackened burgundy-plum shade. This modest lipstick rivals so many similar shades out there from MAC and the likes and is earning it's time in the spotlight this fall. Again, another rising shade.

5. Rimmel Apocalips Lip Lacquer: Galaxy

I felt the need to add this as I have never mentioned Apocalips before (shocking!) and they truly are something else altogether! The shade Galaxy is a step down from the Rimmel 04, It is a sheerer purple tone that is more suggestive rather than full on. I would recommend this shade if you want to try purple lips for the first time, as it is not too overwhelming yet it gives you the tonal benefit. If you like what it does to your complexion it will be easier to try something more opaque. I am not going to dwell of Apocalips any further as I am working on a post with a full review and swatches for the not so distant future!

6. Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner: Obsession

Are you getting sick and tired of Rimmel yet? These liners from Rimmel are ever so soft and creamy and look gorgeous on the lips all by themselves! The shade, Obsession, is an exquisite earthy, plum tone, comparable but brighter than Twig!

7. Rimmel Lasting Finish Lip Pencil: 011 Spice

Wahheyy almost there. 'Spice' the name is very close to what it looks like in reality. a blend of brown and orange to give you this amazing transition shade. I was drawn to this color, aside from it being pretty, because it was actually very different to what you usually get in drugstore lip products, which is a wonder since I if feel it to be such a standard color that should be offered everywhere. If you are missing Summer as I am, a Summer that came and went away without so much as a trace, then this is for you! It is what I can only describe as a 'sunset' shade, it is Summer-going-on-Autumn! A point to note though is that as a pencil, you can imagine this liner does not go on creamy like the Exaggerate liners., not terrible but some of you may be partial to certain textures.

Swatch time!
And here they are in all their Fallen glory!

From Right to Left:
Top: 04, Twig, Utopia, Galaxy, Obsession, Spice
Bottom: Black Cherry

And here is me looking really pleased with myself for finally managing to do this post!

I really do hope you enjoyed reading this post.
I  apologize that they are coming so slow.
If you did, you know the drill, +1 me, like me, share me.
And say hello, your ayes and you nays put them all down below and I will get back to you!

Sunday 29 September 2013
First and foremost I must begin with a huge apology for my absence of near a month and express quite how ardently I have missed you all and my dear blog - it is my baby after all!

You probably won't be surprised to hear that I am now back at uni and already swimming in a modest mound of work, regretfully keeping this blog afloat and updated for you will not be easy but I am determined that this will not be the end.

I have been home for the weekend but rushed back early this morning on account of a rather wonderful venture that had come to town! Leeds Vintage Fair 2013. You may or may not have heard of it before but these fairs take place every year up and down the country, and comprise of a whole host of vintage inspired traders all under one roof, that roof being Town Hall for us in Leeds.

With racks and racks of clothes to be scoured through I lost no time in getting myself acquainted with what felt like a bustling market place set against a backdrop of enormous cathedral-like organs. What it came down to was a colorful array of the weird, the wonderful and of course the down-right outrageous. Aside from the clothes, what was of particular interest, least of all to myself, were the vintage enthused individuals teetering about in ribbons and full skirts. Trust me, it is not to be missed! If you have a fair coming near you, it may well be the perfect opportunity to try playing Dorothy.

There was certainly no shortage of head turning pieces and fair amount of it felt better suited as theatrical props than everyday wear. I searched long and hard to find something unique, intriguing but also wearable to add to my wardrobe but emerged fruitless much to my disappointment.

These gloved, for instance, caught my eye. The back of the hand is, as you can see, net and the palm fully covered. They were so cute and the image of a ditsy girl with pigtails prancing around a golf course was not too far off. Would I wear this every day? Err... I am not entirely sure.

I'll tell you what did have me taking my purse out though. The accessories and jewelry tables were teeming with pretties, rhinestone encrusted, beaded, pearls, the lot! Doves and angel wings were a common design, as were pocket watches, busts and even coats of arms!

I adore this hand mirror and brush set! Very Victorian-esque, they would look stunning on someones dressing table/vanity!

I had better get down to the focus of this post, my goodies!! After my lengthy commentary you won't be surprised that I homed in on jewelry. I love the paper bags that they popped them in, I feel like I have come away with candy.

This is the contents of the first bag. You can see a common trait of worn metal running there, I do like to be particular don't I.

I absolutely love the design of this ring, the spiraling leaves and the touch of teal on the larger leaf.

Next up is yet another ring, I do love rings, this time floral.

I rather reminds me of a Grecian garland, What do you think?

You probably want a close up of the necklace now, don't you?

Keys! Why I find them so appealing is beyond me but I cannot resist a good, old-fashioned, reliable key!

This is a very long line necklace that goes all the way down to my stomach! We all love a bit of dangly!

In the second bag is just the one item:

A bit of silver for a change. This necklace, in my opinion, is beautiful! I suppose as a writer, the script design within it appeals to my inner 'Jane Austen fan-girl'. If you can relate then you will lovelovelove a post that I have just, at this very second, been inspired, by my own person, to write. It involves Words, Darcy and a Tardis, I will say no more!

But yes, that concludes my spoils from Leeds Vintage Fair 2013. Hmm.. I am rather pleased with my lot, and I cannot wait to wear them up and out! Do any of these pieces take you fancy? Do post below and let me know of your opinions. And if you have been to a Vintage Fair yourself, what did you think? Share your thoughts, I love reading them! Signing off..

Toodles!xx

p.s: If you are wondering why there are roses everywhere, I bought a plant, well two actually, for my uni room from the Freshers Fair. They may look a little burnt, that is because they kind of are. I left them on my window sill in full sunlight over the weekend, they clearly didn't like it. Oops!
Tuesday 3 September 2013
I figured a post like this would not only be appropriate due to timing but also because I know it to be a pressing concern for most freshers heading off to uni and most online advice can be pretty vague. I, myself, was painstakingly thorough last year. I couldn't bear the thought of forgetting something, regardless of whether it was petty or important. And though my list, or lists I should say, would be far too lengthy for a post, I shall attempt to give you a gist of it. I hope it helps.

First and foremost, I started by creating titled lists, each list representing a box, it is easier to keep track of things that way. There was: Kitchen, Bathroom, Bedroom, Stationary and Shoes, and yes my shoes needed an entire box of their own!

Let's get started.

The Kitchen

Cutlery:

Some of my flatmates bought whole sets that then sat in their rooms taking up precious space whilst I thoughtlessly brought along only single items and then kept losing them. You know yourself better than anyone else, bring as many as you feel you will need.

You will need multiples of knives, forks and spoon and it is wise to have at least two glasses and mugs. Bowls and plates in various sizes too. Don't forget bigger spoons for cooking, a spoon with slits in it, and a spatula are all helpful.

Pots and Pans:

If you are in non-catered halls you'll be needing these! I like to think of them in terms of eggs. To boil an egg, I'd need a teeny tiny pot, suitable for frozen veg and tinned foods too, and a shallow pan for frying an egg, and perhaps also fillets and maybe some french bread on a Sunday!

Then you have medium sized pots for most of your cooking needs, everything from boiling pasta to heating up frozen food sent to you by your mum ;). I would suggest you bring two as I learnt that its far more convenient to be able to boil your pasta and cook your sauce at the same time!

In the beginning I started off by cooking each meal, if you can call it cooking, individually however as I progressed through my course I got busier and busier and started making larger amounts of food, enough for 3 or 4 meals. In this case you would also need a large wok and most importantly a lid to keep it fresh throughout the day.

Baking?

Are you wondering what sort of leisurely course I do in order to have time to bake? You will find baking trays and baking dishes your most used pieces in the kitchen especially if you eat a lot of ready meals and frozen foods - I am afraid it is inevitable. Everything from fish, burgers, vegetable, chips, Yorkshire puddings end up on a tray. Bring some lengths of foil too, it saves a lot of washing up. Eventually you may find the foil replaces your tray altogether. Dishes are good for lasagnas, if you have the skill, pasta bakes and the likes.

Extras:

Hand towels are a necessity, no one seems to buy kitchen towels any more! Chopping board, oven gloves, drainer for your dishes and a plug hole blocker thingy-wingy, trust me on this, you want to avoid suffering a blocked sink! Black bin liners - you will go through them quite fast. Containers will be useful for storing unfinished food and for taking packed lunches for as long as you can be bothered, eventually they do pile up in the sink and get mixed up and end their lives in the bin! But they are good to have in small numbers.

Some additional things I found myself having to go out an buy are: a can opener, a peeler, a strainer, a grater.

Cleaning products:

Scrubbing pads, washing up liquid and some form of kitchen cleaner, don't stress too much about what your flatmates might also be bringing as again you will go through these quite fast. Rubber gloves will save your life on countless occasions so don't neglect them. Disposable cloths proved indispensable to us so may be worth a thought.

Electricals:

You will have to check will your halls as to whether they will provide a toaster, kettle and iron. Fortunately for us one of our flatmates thought to bring them as we were not provided with them. If this is the case for you, consult your flatmates as soon as you know where you are living (Facebook pages and The Student Room are key tools). Things like a sandwich maker and weighing scales may make life easier.

The Bathroom

Basics but I will mention it anyway: all your shower things and your toothbrush, toothpaste, hand wash and whatever else you like to use. Two towels, a hand towel to keep in your room and bath towel which tends to travel between your room and the bathroom.

A bin, a toilet cleaning brush, a toilet cleaner, a shower/bathroom cleaner, a toilet freshener (get the ones that clip onto the sides as not all toilets have cisterns - so I discovered), air freshener and cloths. On the point of cleaning, I like to keep an anti-bacterial spray for wiping surfaces like the desk, its important when you end up workings and eating, occasionally sleeping in the same place! In this section I think I should also mention washing up powder, liquid and a small tub for the occasional, usually emergency, hand wash. A washing basket, sack or otherwise will be your best friend, you'll find that when you have no clothes left to wear, they are all in here!

This is just me but I think a bath may to be necessary as the floor can potentially get quite wet in some cases dirty even and you won't have time to mop it there and then, a bath mat will be your cushion against the lava (remember the game?)! And I prefer a separate pair of footwear for the bathroom, just personal preference.

Oh and whatever you do, do not forget the toilet roll!

The Bedroom:

Essentials:

I cannot stress how important a laptop is to a student. Your entire student livelihood will revolve around it, most of you will already have a personal one, if not you need to get yourself kitted out, A printer is not essential but even I am beginning to wonder whether I should invest. If you like to print your lecture slides out, a printer would save you a lot of money and time. Also a waste paper basket would be helpful in keeping your room clean-er. Don't kid yourself into thinking you can just take a trip to the bathroom to throw your rubbish, you are more likely to let it pile and pile an pile before you venture out, it is a sad truth. It is quite necessary to have at least two sets of bed sheets and a mattress and pillow protector are a good idea. You will need to bring your own pillows and duvet.

If you are provided with a board, and most rooms are, drawing pins will be needed to keep your prided artwork and soon enough loathsome tables up in full view.

I am not sure how it is with male students but for a girl, or at least me, mirrors are extremely important! Although you may have a wall mirror, a freestanding mirror will be helpful to use whilst sitting at your desk or to place on the floor to get a better view of your shoes ;) !

Personal preferences:

If you like your comfy rugs, bring them along, homely cushions add, well- homeliness and if you are one to get hot easily, a small fan since for some strange reason our rooms tend to get very, very warm. And if you are like me and tend not to fare well with loose pieces of paper, a paper tray on your desk will be of help. Some of you may also like to keep a lamp.

In question of storage space, it is variable across different halls. To be on the safe side I took a tower of 4 plastic drawers. They do not take too much space and is endlessly useful and versatile.

Stationary:

By this I mean, everything study related. Aside from the contents of your seldom used pencil case, empty folders for each of your modules, a ring-bound notebook I found ideal for taking notes in lectures (perhaps 3), refills pads for additional notes and revision. Sticky notes will very likely cover every free surface available in your room, bathroom in many cases, by the summer so get yourself an assortment to keep things interesting. Oh, and I should add there is quite a bit of highlighting associated with revison!

I should also include here that it may be a good idea for you to keep a separate folder for your important documents, and trust before you even start uni you will be accumulating these and the fear of losing them is real and great! Many of them will be called on time and time again whilst you are at uni so keeping them all together and safe is crucial. You'll need everything from you passport, driving licence, national insurance, birth certificate, in some cases your immunization history.

As for books, I was deliberating and deliberating about buying the books off my reading list. There is no need to buy any such books if you prefer not to, they are easily attainable through the library and you are free to renew as often as you like - until they are recalled! And by exam time, finding those abundant book becomes quite a struggle. I, personally, am a book lover and I prefer to have something for reference always available at hand. I settled to buying 1 or 2 of the most useful books which cover several of my modules. It is advisable to speak to former students on your course to find out which books they used the most often in  their first year. There will be University associated book suppliers, but shop around. I find Amazon a cheaper option majority of the time.

If your brain tends to behave like a seive, as mine does on many an occason, I would recommend an academic planner, or mid-year planner. By the time you are only 3/4 of the way through your year you will be up to your throats with work, appointments, deadlines and so on and a planner is a good way of keeping track of it all. I got stationary-happy last year and bought an impressive A5 one that then became a chore to lug around, this year I have opted for a tiny little pocket diary.

Additional

First Aid: plasters and antiseptic spray and cotton, you never know when you will need them!
I forgot to pack a nail cutter when I first went, so easy to overlook but you will notice its absence, I promise! Oh and you may need extra money for your first few weeks, people do like to excessively enjoy themselves at this time of year and then there is the freshers fair!

I am trying to rinse my brain out, I cannot think of what I have missed, I am sure there is plenty, so if you think of something or have a question to ask, do let me know!

Finally take with you the things that speak you and the things you cannot live without, you are less likely to feel homesick that way especially during your low times - we all have them.  For me these were my artwork, some of my favorite books, an entire shelf dedicated to my makeup and perfume, some gifts from my family etc. Make the room your own, it feels so much more comfortable and happier that way. You will feel right at home in no time!

This has been the longest and most exhaustive post I have ever written, I hope it was well worth reading for you guys. Give me a +1 and follow me for more posts and updates and be sure to share this post with anyone else moving out who may find this useful! I want to wish you all the best and remember it is only up from here!

Lots of Love xxx
